May 18, Please Reach Out to Our Legislators

Dear Oxford School Community,

Currently, legislators have not come to an agreement to pass Senate Bills 940 and 941 that would waive our district’s instructional day requirements and other testing and evaluation mandates for the 2021-22 school year.

The state Senate unanimously approved the bills on March 24 however the House has still yet to act. We ask you to respectfully ask Michigan House Representative Pamela Hornberger ([email protected] or call 517-373-8931) to support this important legislative relief package for our district, which has been through so much before it is too late. For further information and links to legislators read this article from the MEA.

The mental health and well-being of our students and staff are essential priorities right now as we continue to heal.  Extending the school year to make up the days missed because of the tragedy is not in anyone’s best interest. Without these bills, our district could lose between $5 million and $7 million because of state requirements which would just further hurt our recovery. Loss of this critical funding could force us to lay off dedicated staff members who continue to play a critical role in the recovery, healing and education of our students.  It would also prohibit us from following through with the hiring of additional proposed staff positions to address our student’s and staff’s trauma: Executive Director of Student Services and Wellness, Recovery Coordinator, two additional Family School Liaisons, and two additional counselors for the high school.

Together we are Oxford Strong,

Ken Weaver
