We are reaching out to share a reminder about federal immigration enforcement and how Oxford Community Schools continues to approach this topic. While recent news coverage has brought renewed attention to these issues, the district’s practices and legal obligations remain unchanged. Oxford Community Schools remains committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment for all students, regardless of immigration status.

Our schools are legally required to educate all children and to protect student privacy. We will continue to:

✅ Ensure that immigration status does not affect a student’s right to education.

✅ Keep student and family information confidential, in accordance with federal and state laws.

✅ Require proper legal authority before sharing student records or allowing law enforcement access.

✅ Remind staff of established protocols to handle any related situations appropriately.

Please see the following message from Oxford Community Schools' Director of Athletics, Tony DeMare:

Hello OCS Families,

Many have inquired about yesterday’s decision by the Michigan High School Athletic Association to allow student-athletes to pursue Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) opportunities on an individual basis. While the decision is one that was somewhat anticipated, it is important for our coaches, student-athletes and community members to be as informed as possible moving forward.

The MHSAA has officially approved the ability for a high school and/or middle school student-athlete of a member school to actively pursue promotional and marketing opportunities with the capability of generating revenue to that respective student-athlete.

The stipulations regarding such revenue-gaining opportunities may include social media activities, commercial activities, appearances and events, autograph signings, trading cards, posters, memorabilia, etc. These opportunities may not involve tobacco use, alcohol use, cannabis use or gambling. In addition, no Oxford Schools or athletic apparel or equipment can be used or worn.

Because this is not a “collective agreement or contract,” the approval is for student-athletes to pursue on an individual basis only. This is not a comprehensive plan that will be orchestrated by any local school district or private school within the State of Michigan. At this time, there are no known “collective agreements" that exist at the high school or middle school level in the United States. Therefore, it will be strictly prohibited that anyone affiliated with the district, i.e. staff, coaches, boosters, teachers and administrators have any involvement in assisting student-athletes in ascertaining marketing opportunities involving their Name, Image & Likeness. Furthermore, any contracts that are agreed upon by a student-athlete and an organization willing to compensate must be approved by the school district, the athletic department and the MHSAA to ensure compliance.

While we acknowledge that our student-athletes are now at liberty to pursue these new endeavors, the Oxford Athletic Department will be diligently committed to compliance with the MHSAA regulations related to these activities.

• All elementary and middle school activities for this evening are canceled.

• High school coaches/advisors have been in communication with their teams. Several high school activities for this evening will continue as scheduled.

Reminder: On days when school is canceled, evening activities are optional. Families/students should only attend if it is safe to do so.

Oxford Community Schools will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 26, 2026, due to hazardous road conditions.

You’re invited to join us for a “Community of the Whole” session focused on our Portrait of a Graduate—our shared vision of the knowledge, skills, and character traits every student should develop by the time they graduate from our district. This portrait guides what we teach, how we teach it, and how we support students from kindergarten through graduation.

About the Session

• Purpose: We’ll provide a brief update on the work completed so far, including how we gathered input from students, families, educators, and community partners, and how themes have emerged.

• Your voice: We’ll facilitate activities to solicit your input on the draft competencies and priorities, so the Portrait reflects our whole community.

• Strategic alignment: This revises our current Portrait of a Graduate to align with the district’s updated strategic plan, ensuring our vision for graduates reflects evolving priorities and continues to prepare every student for college, career, and life.

• Date/Time: Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at 6:00 PM

• Location: Oxford Elementary School (OES); 109 Pontiac Street

• This session is open to all community members, and no registration is required.
  

Your perspectives will help us finalize a portrait that is inclusive, ambitious, and actionable for all students. 

Additionally, we have reopened the Portrait of a Graduate community survey that was sent last month for those who would still like to add their input.
