November 5, Weekly District COVID Update

Dear Wildcat Nation,

I want to take this opportunity to provide an update regarding the Board resolution and the current mask mandate in Oakland County.

It has recently been explained to our leadership (by an elected official) that the Attorney General cannot provide a formal opinion on the conflict between SB 82 and the OCHD mask mandate as our Board requested for two specific reasons.  First, there is pending litigation on this topic that requires legal opinion from the Attorney General, independent of Oxford Community Schools. Second, there is current legislation (Senate Bills 602 & 603), surrounding this issue.

Late yesterday morning, we received further guidance from the office of a different state representative clarifying the enforceability of the mandate issued by Oakland County Health Division. This correspondence states that the order is lawful and that “…local school boards must follow lawful orders of their local health officer.”

Oxford Community Schools is committed to law and order and to serving our community. In the absence of an Attorney General opinion, but with the legal opinions available to us, it is my recommendation that Oxford Community Schools Board of Education not take a vote to suspend the mask mandate.  Any questions or concerns should be directed to Superintendent, Tim Throne.

Go, Wildcats!

Tim
